To avoid mold problems in our hyper-humid state of Florida, two things are the most important: 1) Controlling indoor moisture and humidity levels, and 2) Finding and fixing leaks, dripping pipes, broken windows, etc., as fast as humanly possible, and drying all water up completely. Use dehumidifiers and your A/C to maintain indoor humidity below 50-60%, and ensure proper ventilation in areas like your kitchen and bathroom. Regularly check for and repair any leaks in roofs, windows, and pipes, and quickly dry any wet areas within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. Portable HEPA filter air cleaners can also help remove airborne mold spores. Routine maintenance like cleaning A/C filters and checking drip pans, can also significantly reduce the potential for mold problems. Mold can develop quickly here, sometimes within 24 hours in moist conditions. So keeping indoor humidity below 50-55%, using dehumidifiers, having proper ventilation, and quickly fixing and drying up any water intrusions are crucial to preventing mold. Regular inspections for signs of mold, especially in areas prone to moisture like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, are also necessary. Be aware that Florida’s building materials and construction techniques differ from drier states to combat these issues.
